Wallowa River Oregon Hatches by Month
Northeast Oregon. Freestone water from Wallowa Lake down through the canyon toward the Grande Ronde.
Resident rainbows fish best once runoff drops, usually June through September. Summer steelhead use the lower river from fall into spring. Hatches on this system follow a familiar Blue Mountain pattern: midges and olives through the cold months, caddis and stoneflies after the snow leaves, PMDs and terrestrials in summer, then October caddis and olives again when the nights turn cold.
Dates shift with weather and flow. Confirm current ODFW regulations before you go.

January
Cold pocket water and tailouts. Most trout food is small and subsurface.
- Midges - larva and pupa, sizes 18-22. Fish a zebra midge as a dropper or in a tight-line rig from the Euro nymph box.
- Blue-winged olive - gray, still afternoons. Keep a BWO dry and a Barr's Baetis emerger.
- Steelhead water (lower river) - heavy stonefly nymphs and streamers.
February
Same small-fly program, with a few more olives on overcast days. Steelhead fishing on the lower Wallowa is often at its most consistent.
- Midges and BWO as in January.
- Dark pheasant tail nymphs cover both Baetis and small stones.
March
The river starts to wake. Olives get steadier. Skwala stoneflies crawl when water edges out of the 40s.
- BWO - sizes 16-20. Dry plus emerger.
- Skwala - olive-brown stones, 8-12. Dead-drift a rubber-leg nymph along banks, then a Stimulator-style dry on warmer afternoons. See nymphs and dry flies.
- March Brown - late month on milder days, 12-14.
April
Runoff can stain the canyon. Fish the edges and any clear tributary seams.
- BWO and March Brown on cloudy days.
- Skwala still matters on the first warm stretch of bank.
- Early dark caddis show when the air stays above the 50s.
May
Local guides time the first strong trout dry-fly window to the Mother's Day caddis along the Wallowa. Stonefly nymphs are moving before the adults show.
- Caddis - tan and dark, 14-16. Elk hair caddis and the caddis assortment.
- Stonefly nymphs - 6-10, tight to rocks. From nymphs.
- BWO still hatch on gray afternoons.
June
After flows drop, this is the big-bug month. Salmonflies and golden stones work the banks. PMDs start in the riffles.
- Salmonfly and golden stone - 6-10. Fish a West Fork Salmonfly or Stimulator tight to the wall. Drop a golden stone nymph 18-24 inches below.
- PMD - 16-18. Pale Morning Dun plus a pheasant tail underneath.
- Caddis continue at dusk.
July
The reliable summer dry-fly month on the road-access canyon.
- PMD morning into early afternoon.
- Yellow sally - small yellow stones, 14-16, in faster riffles. A yellow Stimulator or small dry covers them.
- Caddis evenings. Skate or dead-drift an elk hair.
August
Aquatic hatches thin in the heat. Banks and foam lines matter more than mid-river.
- Evening caddis.
- Hoppers, ants, beetles along grass and willows. Shop hoppers and terrestrials. A hopper with a small nymph dropper covers two feeding lanes.
- Late PMD on cooler mornings.
September
Guides on this drainage look for the largest rainbows of the year as nights cool. Terrestrials stay useful. Olives and large caddis start their fall run.
- Hoppers and ants until the first hard frost.
- BWO returns, 18-20. Parachute BWO and the Baetis emerger.
- Early October caddis - orange-tan, 8-12. A large orange Stimulator or caddis dry.
- Streamers in the deeper slots at last light.
October
Classic fall water. Large orange caddis in the afternoons. Olives on gray days. Steelhead season is open on the lower river - check the current pamphlet.
- October caddis and BWO.
- Midges in the slow tails.
- Streamers and stonefly nymphs for trout and steelhead.
November
Short days. Fish the warmest two hours.
- BWO and midges.
- Streamers swung through holding water.
- Small dark stones as a nymph.
December
Midge and streamer program. Steelhead on the lower river if the season is open.
- Zebra midge and other small nymphs.
- Olive or black streamers.
